Why Choose Gator?
You might see “Holds up to 25 lbs” and think, “Sure, but doesn’t every magnetic hook company say that?” Fair question. But here’s what makes Gator Magnetics different: most magnetic hooks are rated using pull force, which measures how hard you have to pull a magnet away from the surface. That’s why you see claims like “Holds up to 25 lbs,” even when the hook can’t manage a hammer. We don’t use pull force as our standard. We use shear force—the downward pressure applied when a hook is actually being used. Think about hanging gear like a backpack, helmet, or your keys. The downward force of those things pulling on the hook is what we measure.
Traditional magnetic hook companies also base their weight ratings on thick steel. So when they say “Holds up to 25 pounds,” they’re basing that number on pull force and steel that’s over 1.5 inches thick. Most people don’t have steel like that in their home, garage, or workshop. In fact, most steel surfaces found in those spaces are much thinner—closer to 16-gauge steel, which is about 0.06 inches thick. That’s what we test our products on. So when we say our hook holds 25 pounds, we mean on the type of surface you actually have.
So why choose Gator? Because thanks to our patented technology, we’ve created magnetic hooks built for real-world situations. By measuring shear force on thin steel, we’ve engineered a hook that actually works—reliably, consistently, and exactly where you need it. We’re not just making magnetic hooks—we’re revolutionizing magnetic storage.
Have Questions About Your Surface?
It’s virtually impossible for us to test on every steel surface out there, but all of our testing is done on 16-28 gauge steel- because that’s the ideal environment for our products to do their job.
We know Gator Magnetics feels like magic, but it’s not – it’s science. If it were magic, we’d be able to conquer every surface out there. But science has rules – and our magnets follow them.
We don’t expect our customers to know everything about steel or the alloys that make up the surface they’re hoping to stick a Gator to. That’s why we’re here! If you’re not sure whether your surface is compatible with our products, email customersupport@gatormagnetics.com . We’d be happy to provide as much information as possible to help you decide if Gator Magnetics is a good fit for your spaces.
